Reanalysis: Evaluation and Intercomparison
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 3181
Session Description:
Reanalyses are consistent data sets which
represent the past state and variability of geophysical systems.
Reanalyses are frequently used as "observations" or "true state" when
assessing the fidelity of model simulations of the recent past, and also

There is also some supporting analysis of increasing precipitation trends and extremes in the recent National Climate Assessment report (Figures 2.15 and 2.16). We are currently reviewing the MERRA File Specification Document, and considering new variables and diagnostics that should be incorporated into future experiments and reanalyses. This is directed toward information that needs to be captured during run time, as opposed to diagnostics that can be post processed from existing data. For example, to get Max/Min temperature from MERRA would be the Michael Bosilovichhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11147576587119755181noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3533345463695431192.post-67374053630987067322012-09-28T16:31:00.000-04:002012-09-28T16:32:54.268-04:00Utilizing Increments in Model DevelopmentMERRA data has complete budgets for water and energy, including the incremental analysis updates (IAU) that constrain the model forecast to the analyzed observations. The increments can be interpreted instantaneously (at the six hour analysis) as a representation of the forecast error, or for longer terms as the mean model bias. The magnitude of the IAU terms are not trivial, and should be Michael Bosilovichhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11147576587119755181noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3533345463695431192.post-51089368598102515362012-09-10T09:19:00.000-04:002012-09-10T09:19:08.636-04:00Extrapolation to P > PsAs many have found, MERRA pressure level data does not provide values for pressure surfaces when they are greater than the surface pressure (e.g. high topography). Other reanalyses extrapolate the data using the surface meteorology and assumed lapse rates. This data may be useful in some cases such as zonal averaging, stream functions and thickness calculations.

Early
in the MERRA reanalysis period, aircraft observations are sparse, but
increase in time, eventually providing a significant amount of
conventional observations. Cardinali et al. (2003) identified biases in
aircraft temperature observations, and Ballish and Kumar (2008) further
examined the biases in each type of commercial aircraft. Figure 1 shows

One
of the most important topics and calculations in climate science is
trend, aiming to determine long term changes. Significant issues exist
in the observational record, and methods correcting the problems
themselves need to be explained and verified. In a recent update to the
U.S. Historical Climate Network (HCN) station data, Vose et al. compare
the observational record against severalMichael Bosilovichhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11147576587119755181noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3533345463695431192.post-77546668658300421082012-08-16T14:51:00.000-04:002012-08-16T14:51:18.740-04:00Return of the MERRA BlogAs many readers will understand, the demands on time can be many, and there is never enough time to do all that you want to do. Being spread thin for some time, the MERRA blog fell into neglect. However, with a lot of interesting things going on, from research with MERRA to formulating plans for subsequent reanalyses (and noticing in the last month a fair number of hits from around the world), I Michael Bosilovichhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11147576587119755181noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3533345463695431192.post-40481083060705389342012-05-18T16:06:00.001-04:002012-05-18T16:06:38.569-04:00Presentations AvailableThe 4th WCRP International Conference on Reanalyses wrapped up Friday, May 11 with a panel discussion on agency priorities and a session on diverse uses of reanalyses and future directions. MERRA data production was put on hold while the data ingest of version 7 was updated. This was only a short delay. Current tests indicate no anomalous behavior in the time series that can be attributed to this change. It was published in AGU EOS last week. The aim of the workshop was to bring together separate disciplines working on data assimilation and reanalysis in separate disciplines, to discuss the needs for and direction to integrated Earth system analysis (IESA). This rain, and likely snow melt from the Northern Great Plains, are contributing to the current prolonged and severe flooding along the Mississippi River and its delta.
